Here We Go!

How to begin....

I guess I should start with my decision to blog, specifically about my challenges with diabetes. Recently, I have decided to take control of my diabetic health. There are a few obstacles that present themselves when attempting to do so.
First and absolutely foremost, the financial constraints that come along with diabetes. Did you know that the average American with diabetes spends an average of 2.3 times more for medical treatment than Americans with no chronic medical conditions?(according to a 2007 study conducted by the American Diabetes Association) A little personal history: I did not have insurance for quite some time. In an attempt to manage my diabetes, I used my credit card to see the doctor and buy my insulin. In a matter of a few months, I had accumulated over $1000 in credit card debt. I have not kept myself educated on Healthcare Reform, but I hope it will assist individuals who find themselves in that situation.
Secondly, I am an admitted but as of yet undiagnosed food addict. My wife can attest that when I want to eat something and I do not allow myself to I become agitated and anxious. As I type this, I am considering making a bowl of cereal....
Thirdly, I have had AWFUL experiences with doctors. I do NOT need to hear that I am going to go blind and have my legs amputated! I do NOT need prescriptions for drugs if I do not know what they are for!
A tip for readers with diabetes: do not use a general practitioner to help manage your diabetes, and find a endocrinologist clinic with an education center.

Those are my main challenges in managing my diabetes. On the other hand, I have tremendous motivation. My wonderful wife Karen, who encourages and helps me so much! My adorable daughter Ivy, who always brings a smile to my face and who I want to see grow up! I have found a doctor who I really believe is committed to my health! Shout out to the Jones Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Wellness in Macon, GA!

I am so excited about this journey! I want this to be the start of something amazing in my life! I would love to have people following my journey as accountability, encouragement, and motivation! Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
